Biography

“Art has an essential role in holding space for contemplation, inviting us to slow down and consider what is at stake. By fostering a sense of wonder and reverence for the natural world, I hope to inspire a deeper awareness of its fragility and a renewed commitment to its care.”

Robert Broughton (b. 1966) is a fine art photographer and writer whose work explores the interplay between humanity and the natural world. The essence of the landscape, for Robert, both signifies and symbolises how nature forms a mirror of our own inner world. The landscape is, then, a perpetual source of inspiration and a place of due reflection.

Throughout his life, he has forged an intimate bond with the land, nurturing his intrinsic appreciation for the delicate balance of the natural world. This reverence for the earth’s equilibrium is the heartbeat of Robert’s artistic journey, infusing his photographic work with a profound sense of place and purpose.

Robert’s love affair with photography began in his teenage years when he diligently learned the craft of film, black-and-white processing, and printing. From 1993 to 1997, he pursued this further by establishing and operating a photography business. However, as life’s demands grew, he transitioned into business management and then formed his own company in 2009, teaching mindful awareness. Throughout this period, his camera remained a constant companion, a silent witness to his unwavering dedication to the art form.

In 2015, a new chapter unfolded as Robert re-embraced photography professionally. Immersing himself in the advancements of digital technology, he embarked on extensive travels across North England, Scotland, and the majestic landscapes of the Nepalese Himalayas. These journeys were not just about capturing beautiful images but about immersing himself in the landscapes, the cultures, and the stories they held. They rejuvenated his spirit and refined his artistic vision, allowing him to fully commit to his lifelong passion.

With his renewed focus on photography, Robert has actively engaged with the art community, participating in open studio events and showcasing his work in a solo exhibition titled ‘Presence’ at The Station Art Gallery in Richmond, Yorkshire, in 2021. His images have garnered individual sales, private commissions, and an ongoing private residency project. Most recently, in September 2024, he presented a selection of eight images from his “The Spirit of Birds” portfolio at Mall Galleries in London, coinciding with the publication of his newly released book of the same name.

Residing near York, Robert continues to explore the intersection of art, the natural world and spirituality through his lens. His monochrome work captures the quiet rhythms and timeless wisdom of the earth. The vast, open skies, a signature element in his photography, echo the depth and complexity of his vision. Each image is not just a picture but a meditation on nature’s splendour, inviting viewers to step into a world where art and the natural world merge seamlessly.
