Artist Residencies & Commissioned Projects

Immersive Art Through Deep Connection with Place

Artist residencies offer me the profound opportunity to step beyond the familiar and allow landscapes to become my collaborators. Through these transformative experiences, I create bodies of work that emerge from genuine dialogue between environment, emotion, and philosophy – art born not from capturing, but from a partnership with the natural world.

My Artistic Approach

My creative process begins with complete immersion in a landscape, allowing its essence to influence my senses and spirit. I believe in the power of slowing down, of letting a place teach me its rhythms before I ever lift my camera or pen to paper.

Working primarily in monochrome, I create subtle conversations between shadow and light that reveal the deeper character of each location. This deliberate choice strips away distraction, allowing viewers to connect with the emotional and spiritual essence of the landscape.

Each residency becomes a meditation on place – whether exploring rugged coastlines with their ancient dialogue between sea and stone, or finding profound stillness in the contemplative valleys in the North Yorkshire Dales where dry stone walls hold memories of generations past.

Core Values & Philosophy

My work explores the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world with every project stemming from a fundamental belief that we are not separate from nature, but integral threads in its vast tapestry.

Through my residencies, I seek to:

  • Craft artworks that portray environmental beauty whilst evoking stewardship and connection
  • Inspire audiences to pause, slow down, and reflect on their relationship with the natural world
  • Create meaningful dialogue about our shared responsibility to protect these precious landscapes
  • Unite visual art with nature’s mentorship and personal experience

The Spirit of Place

During my time at locations like the Lake District’s Great Gable, I’ve discovered that mountains and clouds exist in constant relationship – their complexity and unity reflecting our own interconnected existence. In North Yorkshire’s moorlands, I’ve witnessed how landscapes become spaces for contemplation, where freedom and solitude invite us to embrace uncertainty and find beauty in the unknown.

Residency Outcomes & Impact

What are the typical artistic outcomes of Robert Broughton’s artist residencies?

Each artist residency leads to a cohesive body of work that includes fine art photography and reflective writing. These projects, such as “The Spirit of Birds” (exhibited at Mall Galleries, London 2024), capture the unique spirit of a place and offer an in-depth exploration of the relationship between wildlife, landscape, and human experience.

How does Robert Broughton’s work foster community engagement during residencies?

During residencies, community engagement is central. Robert offers exhibitions, talks, and workshops tailored for local audiences. These activities help participants see their environments with new eyes, deepening appreciation for resilience, adaptation, and the ever-changing beauty of their surroundings.

Are the insights from residencies accessible to a broader audience?

Absolutely. All residency projects are documented and shared through books, publications, and social media, making Robert’s art and insights accessible worldwide. Each publication serves as a visual and literary journey into the interconnection of all life, encouraging conversations about environmental stewardship and ecological responsibility.

How do commissioned projects and residencies support environmental awareness?

Robert’s residencies and commissioned projects are designed to inspire a sense of environmental stewardship and mindful living. By showcasing the intricate bond between people and places, these works encourage audiences to reconnect with nature, appreciate ecological balance, and take actionable steps toward conservation.

What sets my residency practice apart is the emphasis on collaboration rather than extraction. I don’t simply photograph landscapes; I enter into a relationship with them. Whether it’s discovering the “cathedral of tides” at coastal locations or finding sanctuary in the “whispering forests” of inland sites, each place becomes a teacher.

My monochromatic palette creates space for viewers to project their own experiences and emotions into the work, whilst reflective writings invite deeper contemplation of our place within the natural world. This combination of visual art and philosophical reflection creates multi-layered experiences that resonate long after the initial encounter.

From Storms to Stillness

Through projects spanning from the storm-battered coasts of Scotland to the gentle dale country of Yorkshire, I’ve learned that every landscape holds lessons about resilience, beauty emerging from chaos, and the grace found in impermanence. These insights become integral to both the artistic output and community conversations that follow.

Working with Communities & Commissioners

I welcome collaborations with arts organisations, environmental groups, and communities seeking to deepen their connection with place. Whether through formal residency programmes or commissioned projects, I bring experience in creating meaningful dialogue between art, environment, and community.

My approach ensures that each project serves both artistic and social purposes – creating beautiful work whilst fostering the environmental awareness and stewardship our world desperately needs.
