The Spirit of Life

Seascapes
Spaciousness
Artist Statement
I have always found our natural world inspiring, be it the cycles and sublimity of nature, the open expanse of the sea, or the dance of light on a landscape. I have sought to present the expressive quality of these scenes. I hope to awaken a sense of beauty, wonder, and appreciation in my images – the feelings that draw us to nature, one another, and, ultimately, ourselves.
I believe the visual artist’s task is to compose within this expressive medium a sense of wholeness. It is not merely the image and where the frame cuts off but how the elements come together to affect a whole that transcends those individual elements’ meaning. The composition thus also reminds us that this wholeness is also part of our perceptual and sensory experience.
There is an expansive depth to how one can perceive this wholeness, the time taken to observe, the features attended to, and the memories, sensations and feelings that arise and settle within oneself. Becoming sensitive to the experience of our perception, we begin to understand our own presence to a greater extent.
Presence teaches us to notice ourselves as not wholly walled off from the world, independent and separate, but interconnected and a part of what is not ourselves. Recognizing our interdependence is to recognize life itself.
The depth of our presence returns again and again in images that conjure our perception to ruminate. How the image of a coast shrouded in mist makes one feel is an experience words cannot simply, if at all, reveal. It is in the wholeness of the composition and reciprocal presence, the image provides ample room to move into if we can only stop and allow ourselves to be present.
